Improving
the health of our communities
Our work is informed continually by a comprehensive assessment of community health needs, and our grantmaking focuses on making the greatest impact. We’re proud to support local nonprofits and community partners meeting the critical health needs of underserved populations. Together, we’re creating healthier and more equitable communities.
In 2022, Kaiser Permanente provided more than $3 million in charitable contributions to address community health priorities in our Greater Southern Alameda County service area. Read on for examples of our work.
Supporting community mental health
Amid a national mental health professional shortage, we invested in expanding a diverse, well-trained, culturally responsive mental health workforce. We also focused on increasing access to mental health services for low-income and vulnerable populations.
One example is our support of Kidango and its Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation at 33 Kidango child development centers in Southern Alameda County. Mental health consultants work with teaching teams and families to promote positive mental health and buffer the effects of trauma and toxic stress. Our support helped Kidango serve more than 2,500 children ages 0 to 5 from low-income households.
Strengthening the health care safety net
We partnered with safety-net hospitals and community health centers to improve care quality for low-income, Medi-Cal, and uninsured patients. Kaiser Permanente clinicians also donated their time and expertise to support these patients.
Our grant to Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center helped support its operation of 10 primary care clinics throughout Southern Alameda County, providing medical, dental, and family support services in a multilingual, culturally welcoming environment. Tiburcio Vasquez serves mostly low-income, uninsured patients with limited English language skills.
Supporting economic opportunities to change lives
Financial health is fundamental to people’s ability to maintain overall health. We supported organizations that work with underserved populations to promote college and career readiness, quality jobs, and diverse small business growth.
An example of this is our support of the San Leandro Boys and Girls Club’s Hospitality-Restaurant Management Program. The program helps low-income youth facing barriers to employment with social and emotional skills while developing transferable skills and real-life work experience.

As part of our commitment to improve health and health equity in our community, every 3 years we conduct a rigorous and collaborative community health needs assessment.
