Addressing hunger during COVID-19<\/h1>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column el_class=”block-scroll-arrow”][vc_column_text css_animation=”none”]\"\"<\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row local_scroll_id=”content” el_class=”block-section”][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-offset-2 vc_col-lg-8 vc_col-md-offset-1 vc_col-md-10″][vc_column_text el_class=”block-intro”]The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread business closures, a steep rise in unemployment, and a surge in the number of people who did not have consistent access to enough food. The California Association of Food Banks estimates that 1 in 4 Californians is now struggling with food insecurity.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]With a commitment to helping people access and afford healthy food, Kaiser Permanente responded in several ways. We started with a $1.5 million grant to Stephen and Ayesha Curry\u2019s Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation to deliver 150,000 healthy restaurant meals to Oakland students and families over the course of 6 weeks.<\/p>\n

The effort, in collaboration with the Oakland Unified School District and World Central Kitchen, paid local restaurants to create the meals; enabling many restaurants to stay in business and keep workers employed, while supporting Oakland families in need. [\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” content_placement=”middle” equal_height=”yes” tablet_fullwidth_cols=”yes” el_class=”block-quote-photo-wrap”][vc_column css_animation=”slideInRight” el_class=”block-quote” offset=”vc_col-md-6″][vc_column_text css_animation=”slideInLeft”]We\u2019ve always known that food insecurity was a big issue in Oakland, which is why \u2018Eat,\u2019 one of our key pillars in the foundation, was set in place.\u201d – Stephen Curry, co-founder of Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-md-6″]

\"Photo<\/div><\/figure>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row remove_bottom_col_margin=”true”][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-offset-2 vc_col-lg-8 vc_col-md-offset-1 vc_col-md-10″][vc_column_text]Kaiser Permanente also awarded 18 grants of $95,000 each to Northern California food banks, community clinics, and family resource centers to fund innovative ways to enroll eligible households in CalFresh, California\u2019s food stamp program. The $1.7 million in funding helped these nonprofits serve the growing number of people in the community needing food assistance, many of whom lost their jobs due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n

For example, Kaiser Permanente\u2019s support of the San Francisco Marin Food Bank enabled it to bolster its efforts to reach out to Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ communities, helping 1,400 eligible households apply for CalFresh benefits.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know these communities are more at risk for hunger, especially during the pandemic,\u201d said Liliana Sandoval, who leads CalFresh enrollment efforts in San Francisco for the San Francisco Marin Food Bank.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” content_placement=”middle” equal_height=”yes” remove_bottom_col_margin=”true” tablet_fullwidth_cols=”yes” el_class=”block-quote-photo-wrap option”][vc_column el_class=”block-offset-content” offset=”vc_col-md-6″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInLeft” el_class=”highlights”]In 2020, Kaiser Permanente also addressed food insecurity with the following grants and initiatives:[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” offset=”vc_col-md-6″ el_class=”numbers-overlay bg-drk-blue callout-stats”][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear” el_class=”stat lte-green”]Funding for the California Association of Food Banks<\/strong> to secure state funding for emergency food disaster assistance and the California WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Association to ensure WIC benefits are provided to eligible families.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear” el_class=”stat lte-purple”]A text campaign targeting eligible low-income Kaiser Permanente members<\/strong>\u00a0to help them quickly and easily apply for CalFresh.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear” el_class=”stat lte-teal”]Donations of tens of thousands of pounds of unserved nutritious hospital meals<\/strong> from 17 Kaiser Permanente Northern California medical centers to food pantries and homeless shelters.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n
