Supporting health through housing<\/h1>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column el_class=”block-scroll-arrow”][vc_column_text css_animation=”none”]\"\"<\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row local_scroll_id=”content” el_class=”block-section”][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-offset-2 vc_col-lg-8 vc_col-md-offset-1 vc_col-md-10″][vc_column_text el_class=”block-intro”]When the COVID-19 virus began spreading last spring, the estimated 151,000 people living in cars, tents, and on the streets of California faced another dire risk to their health. Because many people experiencing homelessness are older adults and many have underlying chronic conditions, they are at increased risk for severe illness if infected.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Sixty-three-year-old Patricia Maes was living outside at the time, sleeping near a San Jose park, and undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She was terrified she would catch COVID-19 and die.<\/p>\n

Recognizing the urgency of limiting the spread of the virus, Kaiser Permanente awarded a $25 million dollar grant to the national affordable housing nonprofit Enterprise Community Partners to work in partnership with the State of California to support the state\u2019s Homekey program.<\/p>\n

Homekey was created to help people like Maes. It provided funding to cities and counties to buy and rehab hotels, motels, and vacant apartment buildings to convert them into interim or permanent long-term housing for people experiencing homelessness.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” content_placement=”middle” equal_height=”yes” tablet_fullwidth_cols=”yes” el_class=”block-quote-photo-wrap”][vc_column css_animation=”slideInRight” el_class=”block-quote” offset=”vc_col-md-6″][vc_column_text css_animation=”slideInLeft”]The Kaiser Permanente funding is a game changer for putting vulnerable Californians on a pathway to safe, affordable, and healthy homes\u201d – James Yelen, a program director for Enterprise Community Partners in Northern California<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-md-6″]

\"\"<\/div><\/figure>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row remove_bottom_col_margin=”true”][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-offset-2 vc_col-lg-8 vc_col-md-offset-1 vc_col-md-10″][vc_column_text]The funding supports operating subsidies, wraparound services, and technical assistance for 22 Homekey properties and up to 1,000 new permanent housing units across the state, from San Bernardino to Sacramento. Among those properties is a former San Jose motel that Maes now calls home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey give us meals here, and I\u2019m eating better and starting to gain back some of the weight I lost from chemo,\u201d Maes said. \u201cI can lock the door, know that I\u2019m safe, and I don\u2019t have to sleep with one eye open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across the nation, people of color are disproportionately affected by homelessness and housing insecurity, a situation made worse by the pandemic. Our focus on addressing homelessness and affordable housing aims to both improve health and advance equity in the communities we serve.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” content_placement=”middle” equal_height=”yes” remove_bottom_col_margin=”true” tablet_fullwidth_cols=”yes” el_class=”block-quote-photo-wrap option”][vc_column css_animation=”slideInRight” el_class=”block-offset-content” offset=”vc_col-md-6″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInLeft” el_class=”highlights”]In addition to supporting the Homekey program, in 2020, Kaiser Permanente supported safe, stable, affordable housing on many other fronts including:[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” offset=”vc_col-md-6″ el_class=”numbers-overlay bg-drk-blue callout-stats”][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeIn” el_class=”stat lte-green”]$14.2 million in impact housing investments throughout Northern California<\/strong> to preserve 650 units of affordable housing.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeIn” el_class=”stat lte-blue”]Support of Community Solutions\u2019 \u201cBuilt for Zero\u201d initiative<\/strong> to help Northern California communities adopt data-driven tools and technologies to end homelessness and the conditions that create it.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeIn” el_class=”stat lte-green”]In Sacramento, a commitment of up to $25 million in impact investments for affordable housing and a $5 million in grant funding<\/strong> to support emergency shelter capacity.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n
