Last year, Nelson lost his job as a social worker, fell behind on his rent, and began living in his car. He joined the estimated 151,000 Californians who are homeless.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u201cI already had some underlying health issues, and I got really sick living in my car. I began to eat very little, I had trouble sleeping, and I was just wiped out mentally,\u201d he said. \u201cI drove myself to the emergency room and they found I had 2 blood clots on my lung and a kidney infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nelson contacted Alameda County\u2019s 2-1-1 service and found housing through a Bay Area Community Services (BACS) program.\u00a0 In 2019, working with funding from Kaiser Permanente Northern California and support from Alameda County and the City of Oakland, BACS housed 515 formerly homeless Oakland seniors with a chronic health condition or disability.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” content_placement=”middle” equal_height=”yes” tablet_fullwidth_cols=”yes” el_class=”block-quote-photo-wrap”][vc_column el_class=”block-quote” offset=”vc_col-md-6″][vc_column_text css_animation=”slideInLeft”]This is groundbreaking and compassionate work on behalf of our senior residents. \u201cIt\u2019s allowed me to access work. It\u2019s allowed me to access medical care. It improves my mental health, and I\u2019m able to build a new life,\u201d Nelson said.<\/p>\n

Improving Conditions for Health<\/h2>\n

Kaiser Permanente invests in affordable housing and programs to alleviate homelessness, food insecurity, and social isolation because safe, stable housing and other factors such as nutritious food and meaningful social connections are vital for a person\u2019s physical and mental health.<\/p>\n

Access to affordable housing is also key to creating a more healthy and equitable future for our communities. In Alameda County, 8,022 people experienced homelessness in 2019, an increase of 43% in 2 years. Nearly 50 percent of homeless people in the county are Black, even though Black people account for just 11% of the county\u2019s population.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row_content_no_spaces” content_placement=”middle” equal_height=”yes” remove_bottom_col_margin=”true” tablet_fullwidth_cols=”yes” el_class=”block-quote-photo-wrap option”][vc_column el_class=”block-offset-content” offset=”vc_col-md-6″][vc_column_text css_animation=”fadeInLeft” el_class=”block-intro white”]\n

In addition to partnering with BACS, in 2019, Kaiser Permanente worked to preserve affordable housing and end homelessness by:<\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp” offset=”vc_col-md-6″ el_class=”numbers-overlay bg-drk-blue callout-stats”][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear” el_class=”stat lte-purple”]Partnering with Enterprise Community Partners and investing $11.6 million<\/strong> to maintain or increase the affordable housing supply in Northern California.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear” el_class=”stat lte-blue”]Partnering with Community Solutions\u2019 Built for Zero initiative<\/strong> to help communities in Sacramento, Marin, Contra Costa, Madera, and Santa Cruz counties to adopt data-driven tools and technologies to end homelessness and the conditions that create it.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear” el_class=”stat lte-green”]Investing $2 million to help maintain Keep Oakland Housed<\/strong>, a program that includes emergency financial assistance, legal representation, and supportive services to help keep low-income Oakland residents from becoming homeless.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-offset-2 vc_col-lg-8 vc_col-md-offset-1 vc_col-md-10″][vc_column_text]Kaiser Permanente partnered with the San Francisco Foundation, the City of Oakland, BACS, Catholic Charities of the East Bay, and East Bay Community Law Center to launch Keep Oakland Housed in 2018. In its first 2 years of funding, the program helped keep an estimated 7,500 Oakland residents in housing.<\/p>\n
